Gerald Unwin

Based on memories, everyday issues, political, environmental, historical & cultural references, humour plays a large part in my idiomatic sculptures. I also make practical pieces.
I made my first pot when I was nine and interest in the medium continued throughout school, college and university. I went on to teach ceramics, art and technology in secondary and further education. I am now retired. Besides drawing on memory, my work has increased in scope and scale and continues to be influenced by concerns regarding our somewhat skewed society. Inspired by what I see and hear, recent pieces relate to cultural references, such as popular songs like “Rock Around The Clock” and “Twist & Shout”; politics – ‘A Starmer Tsunami’; the work of artists such as Picasso – “Taking The Bull By The Horns” and Toulouse Lautrec – ‘Cloak & Dagger”; as well as linking them to contemporary issues such as the banning of zombie knives and energy security, relating to wind-turbines and fracking. Some pieces are just humorous sayings, such as “Who Ate All The Pies ?” & “That’s Torn It”.
