Maureen Laycock OBE
My influences follow the Impressionists, particularly Cezanne. I’m also influenced by Hockney and Hodgkin. I paint using acrylics and oils, also textiles and collage.
I am an art returner after retiring in 2011 as a secondary headteacher, which I did for 17 years in Sheffield. My return to art, my first love, was as a consequence of a retirement holiday with my husband in a camper van in New Zealand. The size, beauty of the country blew me away, particularly the hills, mountains, rivers and waterfalls.
Having downsized to a cottage in Oughtibridge, I now have a studio in the garden which I work in nearly every day for 2/3 hours. This is my messy, creative sanctuary with nice music playing and lovely views over the Jarvil pond with a resident heron.
I get considerable ideas and motivations from local walks in Bradfield, Worrall, Derbyshire and when on holiday. I generally produce semi abstract landscape paintings but recently have also been executing more abstract pictures with some trepidation. But it’s good to challenge yourself.
