Sally Cunis

I am a printmaker mainly creating linocuts to form relief prints. I enjoy experimenting with a combination of relief printing, monoprinting and drypoint etching.

I am inspired especially by nature, by wildflowers, by plants, trees and the birds in our garden and woodland. Landscapes, coastlines, old buildings and much loved furniture are infinitely fascinating; the weathering of time and the patina of age are all perfect mark making for a print maker. I use traditional lino for many of my relief prints, especially the larger pieces but also Japanese lino.

I print with leaves and seeds to create monoprints, often as a background for linoprints. Recently I have used drypoint etching to build up depth. Variation in colour is achieved in several ways: in the reduction process the block is gradually cut away to achieve successive layers of colour. I may print separate blocks onto one print or apply colour using the ” fade ” technique. I hand print with a Slama press, a book binding press and also with a borrowed etching press.
