Samantha Groom

I create bold, bright, colourful & playful woodcut and linocut prints, free standing printed wooden ornaments, collages, textile wall hangings and one-off lampshades. I also run printmaking workshops.

Inspiration for my work springs from everyday things around me, nature and a love of play. Experimenting with materials, colour and composition to evoke childhood memories and a sense of joy, warmth and fun. When printing, I work instinctively, building up layers, combining colours, shapes and textures, striving to find balance, harmony and clarity.

I studied sculpture for my degree, but on discovering woodcut printing after graduating, I realised I was home. I love the rigidity of wood and how a carved line doesn’t go always go in the direction you expect! Since then I’ve developed my work to include other print techniques and I like to utilise printed papers and fabrics into collages and textile pieces. I also regularly run printmaking workshops for adults and visit many schools to teach art and printmaking too.
