The Black Fish Press (Linda Baxter)

The Black Fish Press

Textile designer and printer Linda Baxter, aka The Black Fish Press, uses traditional block printing skills to produce cushions, lampshades, stitched quilts and fabric lengths.

Having taught art and design in London and Wales I moved to Sheffield in 2012 and began the Black Fish Press two years later.

Sheffield is a great place to run a small creative business and I find it easy to keep my business local, using inks from Hawthorns in York, linen and cotton fabrics sourced from Bradford and cushions made up here in Sheffield.

With each new design project I make small batches of textile pieces for sale on my website, and then store the blocks and printing notes for future orders.

I love the process of block printing and the complexity of designs, textures and colours which can be achieved by a repetition of simple blocks and patterns, and from the use of overprinting and repositioning of blocks.

My inspiration usually comes from the man-made – from the forms and patterns of artefacts and the built environment.
