Trudy Weir

My work highlights my development of techniques in combining different clay bodies and slips to produce an eclectic mixture of patterns and surfaces.
Some years ago I was fortunate to be able to take early retirement and do a degree in 3D Contemporary Craft at York University. During this time I became drawn to ceramics. Clay is a fascinating medium with endless possibilities. I now have a studio in my garden where I can play with clay.
I have been mistreating clay for some time now. My work usually starts with a thick slab constructed from different clay bodies and slips laminated together . The top is then blasted with a heat gun which dries the top layer, then when the slab is rolled out, the top can’t stretch as far as the bottom and it produces the cracking I am looking for. In other work I use a Nerikomi technique to produce more formal patterning and sometimes I combine the two.
Once I am satisfied with the slab I have produced I then decide how I will construct my piece.
